Support PyRe Weather

If you love creating weather maps, this page is for you.

Maybe you came to PyRe Weather because you wanted to see the 500 mb pattern on the day of a significant storm. Maybe you've been working through one of the tutorials, looking at tornado setups, following hurricane development, or watching a monsoon take shape over the course of a season.

Or maybe you just like exploring the atmosphere and seeing where the next map takes you.

If you've been enjoying PyRe Weather, please consider becoming a Supporter.

PyRe is built around public weather and climate data that is freely available, but traditionally hasn't been very easy to explore without specialized software or some programming knowledge. PyRe was designed to make creating weather maps as easy as possible without having to know how to code. Choose what you want to look at, when, and where in the atmosphere and your map is generated in seconds most of the time. Which usually leads to another question, so you make another map.

Why I want to keep PyRe free

I first learned to make reanalysis maps as a meteorology student. We used an older NOAA plotting site for our labs, and it was one of those simple tools that opened up an enormous amount of weather history.

When we learned that the site was no longer being maintained and could no longer map current data, we were genuinely disappointed. My instructor commented that recreating that kind of functionality would be a huge contribution to the weather community.

So I decided to try.

That project became PyRe Weather.

I want students, instructors, weather enthusiasts, and anyone who is simply curious about the atmosphere to be able to come here and make useful maps without having to buy a subscription.

Supporters help make that possible.

What your support pays for

Running PyRe has real costs: servers, data storage, processing thousands of weather files, generating maps, maintaining the site, fixing things that break, and continuing to build new tools.

Your support helps cover those costs while allowing the core mapping tools to remain available for free.

Supporter access

Supporters also get expanded mapping ranges:

  • 3-hourly composite maps: up to 2 weeks
  • Daily composite maps: up to 3 months
  • Monthly composite maps: up to a full year
  • Full access to PyRe's anomaly, normalized anomaly, climatology, and map library features

If PyRe has become useful to you, pay it forward.

Whether you use it for school, research, teaching, forecasting, writing, or simply because weather is fascinating, your support helps keep PyRe running and keeps the door open for the next student to discover the atmosphere through historical mapping.
